The round-arched window at Le Moulin aux Épices, open onto the river, with its wicker poufs and the old fireplace

The apartment

An apartment on the water

Two bedrooms, a living room and an 8 m² terrace above the Ill, in Strasbourg’s sought-after Petite France quarter.

The apartment

The whole apartment, just for you.

It takes up part of the ground floor of the Würtzmühle, Strasbourg’s old spice mill, built on the Ill in the 17th century. The river runs beneath the building, between its piers, and past the windows.

At its centre, a 42 m² room brings together the sitting room, dining room and fully equipped kitchen. The main wall carries a blue and gold mural by the Alsatian artist Williann.

Around it: two bedrooms for four guests, a bathroom, a separate WC, and an 8 m² terrace above the water.

The mural

Williann, fourteen square metres of colour

The work of Williann, a Strasbourg illustrator and muralist, covers the whole wall: 7 metres by 2. Nathalie chose the blue; the yellow and gold, added by the artist, recall the temples and pagodas of Asia, and also the warm colours of spices.

Frequently asked questions

What people often ask us before booking.

Yes. The building stands on the river and a weir is very close. With the windows open, the noise is constant. It is hard to hold a conversation there. Even so, many guests compare it to a very soft white noise that you quickly get used to once the windows are shut.

It is also, often, what guests liked best. One of them sums it up: “It’s very picturesque. It’s nature in the city; you have to like it.”

Some evenings, yes. A club, NEXT, occupies the basement of the building. It usually opens Thursday to Saturday; the days can vary, and its website has the current ones.

On opening nights, what you mostly hear is the dull thud of the bass. Earplugs are provided and are generally enough for most guests.

Everything is listed further up this page: full kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, Wi-Fi and workspace, television, central heating, fans, board games, earplugs, and an 8 m² terrace above the water.

The apartment is let as a whole: nobody else is there. What it doesn’t have: air conditioning, private parking or a carbon monoxide detector.

Four guests at most: two in each bedroom.

The first has two 90 × 200 cm single beds, the second a 160 × 200 cm double, all with hotel-quality mattresses. One bathroom, and a separate WC.

No. The apartment isn’t set up for very young children: we have no cot and no high chair.

Check-in from 4 pm, check-out by 11 am. Check-in is self-service: the keys wait for you in a secure key box inside the building.

One thing to note: we cannot be reached after 8 pm. Arrive before then if you can, and if your train gets in later, let us know in advance rather than on the evening itself.

Yes. The apartment is all on one level: no stairs inside, so no need for a lift.

However, there are a few steps at the building’s entrance. If that is a problem, write to us before booking.

No. The Moulin is in a pedestrian zone, with no free parking in the surrounding streets. You can stop to unload on the small square fifteen metres away; parking there is paid, and expensive.

The nearest and cheapest public car park is “Centre historique Petite France”, rue de Molsheim: 900 metres, about twelve minutes on foot, €12 for 24 hours. During your stay, you can do everything on foot.

No, there is no air conditioning. There are fans in the bedrooms, and reviews often mention them favourably. But in very hot weather the apartment stays warm. Worth bearing in mind for a stay in July or August.
